Tree Stump Table from “Old Wood”
“Old wood,” according to the Old Wood Regulation, refers to wood that has already been used for a specific purpose and is now being discarded as waste for old wood disposal or repurposed as a secondary raw material. In our case, we consider old wood as wood from trees in the region that have reached the “end of their life” (for example, they have been victims of a storm, had to be removed for safety reasons, or have died internally). In traditional woodworking, these logs have only one use: firewood. We give this "old wood" a new purpose and allow the wood to "live on" in a very special way.
The creation of a tree stump table from “old wood” requires expert knowledge. The first step is to select the logs and cut them to the desired length and width. Since we do nothing but preserve nature – in its most primal form – as well as possible, we do not alter the wood; the shape of each log dictates what final object will be created. Next, the logs need to be cleaned and freed of any nails or screws that might still be embedded in them.
The tabletop from old wood can be crafted in various ways. In our case, the “cracks” are filled with epoxy resin to create a smooth surface and stabilize the damaged wood. Once the epoxy resin is prepared by our “Stammdesigners,” it is poured into the cracks and decayed spots.
A protective layer of oil helps preserve the surface of the table while maintaining its natural beauty. For our tables, we ensure the surface is optimally protected with two layers of oil. A handmade tree stump table with epoxy resin thus combines the natural uniqueness of the wood with the modern shine and durability of epoxy resin.
As mentioned earlier, the use of “old wood” not only has an aesthetic value but is also ecologically sensible. By reusing existing wood or wood that would otherwise only be suitable for firewood, the demand for new wood is reduced, thus helping protect forests. A tree stump table made from old wood is therefore not only a unique piece of furniture but also a sustainable and environmentally conscious statement for generations to come.
