We are often asked which types of wood are best suited for our tree stump tables, and what the advantages and disadvantages of each are. For this reason, we have summarized the most important points for you. Of course, it’s also important to consider that besides the “workability” of the tree species, personal preferences and budget also play a role. Essentially, a table is always a unique piece of furniture and can be chosen independently of the rest of the decor.

Deciduous or Coniferous Wood?

In general, our Stammdesign tables are made from deciduous trees, primarily for the following reasons:

  • Hardness and Durability: Deciduous wood is generally harder and more robust than coniferous wood, making it more suitable for crafting furniture pieces like our tree stump tables.

  • Grain and Texture: Deciduous woods often have distinctive grain and texture, which can give the tree stump table a natural beauty.

  • Wear Resistance: Deciduous wood is generally more resistant to wear than coniferous wood.

  • Wider Color Range: Deciduous woods come in a broader range of colors and tones than coniferous wood.

  • Availability: Many types of deciduous wood are widely available and therefore easier to source than others.

However, even among deciduous trees, some species, such as chestnut, can present challenges in the production of our tables. Chestnut, for example, is quite soft compared to our all-time favorites like ash, oak, maple, beech, walnut, or elm.

Stammdesign Wood Favorites Overview

1. Elm

Tree stump tables made from elm are still relatively unknown and thus offer a unique character. The grain and the reddish-brown coloration clearly distinguish it from other woods, making the furniture a standout piece.

2. Smoked Oak

Through a special processing method, a color finish can be created according to the customer's preference. This ensures that each tree stump table is truly one-of-a-kind.

3. Ash

The color contrasts between the light edge and the darker interior are particularly striking and make this wood species unique. It is ideal for combining with oak flooring or oak furnitur

4. Walnut

This species is one of the most premium and features all shades of brown. The soft structure and grain are simply a dream. For this reason, walnut is highly sought after for furniture creation.
